I've made it onto the small screen—of your computer, that is. At last month's Federation of Genealogical Societies conference, Roots Television captured my chat with the ebullient Chris Haley (this actor and Maryland state archivist caught the genealogy bug from his uncle, Roots author Alex Haley).

Catch the 5-minute interview, as well as other videos, on the just-turned-one-year-old Roots Television (go to http://rootstelevision.com/

and click the box that says Family Tree Magazine).

In this newsletter, we'll quiz Family Tree Magazine readers on the November 2007 issue, tell you about some new online research resources, share Forum users' "genealogy moments" and more. Thanks for reading!

Don't Forget Estate Records
This tip comes from Forum member Happy Dae
, who assures you you're not necessarily out of luck if your ancestor didn't leave a will:

When looking for wills of individuals, don't forget the estate records. My ancestor didn't leave a will. Cemetery records didn't exist, and his gravestone had been destroyed. Thus, I had no date of death. However, in his estate records I found a bill for medical care giving dates of treatment, which indicated the approximate date of death. This estate record was dated 1846.
If you have a great idea for discovering, preserving or celebrating family history, post it in our Submit Your Tips and Win Forum (you must be registered with the Forum first). If we publish your tip in the E-mail Update newsletter, you'll win a free genealogy book or CD.
