%%MAILING_SEND_DATE%%

I recently requested microfilm from the Texas state archives through interlibrary loan. One day after work, I stopped by my local Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, picked up the film at the circulation desk, loaded it onto a genealogy department microfilm reader, printed the pages I needed, dropped off the film and went home. Less than a half-hour all told and smooth as silk.

Libraries—little ones and big ones, private ones and public ones—are essential to our family research. That's why we're planning a Family Tree Magazine article to honor libraries around the country with excellent genealogy offerings in a variety of areas. We're asking librarians to nominate their libraries by filling out our questionnaire about their collections. Learn more in our article below.

And here's hoping your holidays are filled with loved ones and lots of family history reminiscences.

You can learn more details and download our library questionnaire from www.familytreemagazine.com/librarysurvey. Hurry—the deadline is Jan. 14.

Caring for Heirloom Ornaments
These tips come from the January 2008 Family Tree Magazine:

  • Make sure caps and hooks are secure before hanging ornaments.
  • Put cotton batting or foam padding under your tree skirt in case an ornament falls.
  • Detergents and even water can remove old paint, so gently dry-dust glass baubles.
  • It's OK to polish metal ornaments, but test the polish on a tiny area first.
  • Place ornaments in an acid-free box with cardboard separators, and don't store heavy objects above it.
Post your tips for discovering, preserving or celebrating family history in our Submit Your Tips Forum, and you could win a free genealogy book or CD. You must register with the Forum to post.
